Pillar designs
I started this project unsure of what I would like to do as my pillar design so I decided to experiment on Maya and mold it into many different shapes and sizes as well as trying different cultural origins.
This first piece I designed to look like a dungeon pillar from Diablo 3 in order to see what ideas I would like and which culture Id like to choose.
The second design I wanted to just experiment with spiral shapes to see what patterns I could achieve form it and what effects the smooth tool gives.
This one was more of a re-design of the dungeon style pillar but had a flame or crystal in the center of the pillar. I enjoyed this pillar design as it reminded me of knights of the round table castle style.
This next design I tried to design the pillar in the style of Japaneses pillars, but I decided not to choose it because I thought it looked awfully like a bird house.
This last design I liked quite a lot because of its simplicity, It was inspired by Stonehenge and made me think of viking style pillars.
I made my designs on Maya rather then drawing them on Photoshop because I felt that this would help me explore different ways to mold the mesh in Maya and futher my progress/confidence using it.
I really enjoyed exploring these ideas as they gave me more of a wider knowledge of Maya and how a pillar is structured to either be realistic or fantasy.
What I would change next time is not take as much time to decide on my favorite design as it hindered me later in the project when I didn't have as much time to progress through my maps.
